Company Overview

Founded in 1971 by its current Chairman, Z.J. Chelec, Zalco started as a small property management company, with operations concentrated primarily in suburban Maryland. But over the last three decades Zalco has become so much more, steadily and thoughtfully expanding its in-house expertise and operational coverage in the marketplace to meet the changing needs of an ever-growing client base. Today, Zalco offers one of the most attractive combinations of size, service-capability and convenience of any real estate firm in the greater Washington metropolitan area.

Headquartered in THE ZALCO BUILDING, in the heart of Silver Spring, Maryland's exciting new downtown, Zalco's current service operations blanket virtually all of Northern Virginia, Washington, DC and suburban Maryland, utilizing over 600 field personnel, supervised by over 65 executive, management and administrative employees at the main office. Its extensive leasing and management portfolio includes well over 100 commercial and residential properties, with an aggregate value of over $4 billion. And its impressive client list includes some of Washington's most-recognized names and respected organizations, such as The Watergate, Howard University, The American College of Surgeons, and several of Washington's diplomatic embassies downtown. Retaining such a broad and elite clientele in today's ultra-competitive marketplace is not easy, but Nonetheless, Zalco has been able to not only maintain but also expand its operations year after year.

While there is no single secret to Zalco's continued success, its tremendous in-house service capability is certainly one of its strongest assets. Even more important however are the people who provide the services, which comprise Zalco's unique multifaceted group of in-house professionals and staff. At its headquarters alone Zalco boasts two building-systems engineers and two CPA's, not to mention a well-rounded compliment of nearly two dozen brokers, agents and property managers, almost all with at least 10 years of industry experience, and many with as much as 30 years. These and other personnel comprise Zalco's four operational divisions, each of which are headed by a member of Zalco's experienced executive team.

Despite its continued success, Zalco has never lost its local focus and has resisted the urge to expand beyond the market that it has come to know so well over the years. As a result, Zalco remains what many consider to be the perfectly sized company for clients who need Washington area specialists.
